Netflix’s Adaptation of the Musical ‘In the Heights’ Is Set to Release in 2021
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical, In the Heights, is set to make its way to Netflix. The streaming platform announced in February 2020 that a big-screen version of the acclaimed stage production would be released on its platform in 2021. This adaptation is directed by Jon M. Chu, who helmed Crazy Rich Asians and directed several music videos for Justin Bieber, and written by Quiara Alegría Hudes, who wrote the original stage version of In the Heights.
The story follows a close-knit community of friends and family living in Washington Heights, a predominantly Latino neighborhood in New York City. Usnavi de la Vega (Anthony Ramos) is a bodega owner whose dreams of returning to his native Dominican Republic are complicated by his feelings for Vanessa (Melissa Barrera), his crush next door.
Meanwhile, Nina Rosario (Leslie Grace) has returned home after her first year at Stanford University with newfound independence but also a troubling secret that threatens her relationship with her parents. All these characters and more come together to tell an uplifting story of love and hope amidst adversity.
The cast also includes some familiar Broadway stars: Olga Merediz will reprise her Tony Award-nominated role as Abuela Claudia; Corey Hawkins as Benny; Daphne Rubin-Vega as Daniela; Stephanie Beatriz as Carla; Dascha Polanco as Cuca; Jimmy Smits as Kevin Rosario; Marc Anthony as Sonny’s father; Noemi Gonzalez as Graffiti Pete; Gregory Diaz IV as Sonny de la Vega; and Melissa Barrera as Vanessa. The musical numbers will be choreographed by Christopher Scott and Andy Blankenbuehler, who previously worked on Miranda’s Hamilton musical.
The film has been highly anticipated since its announcement last year due to its unique blend of hip hop culture and Latinx identity with powerful stories about family, love, friendship and striving for better lives in difficult situations.
