Is Shin Godzilla on Netflix?

Shin Godzilla, also known as Godzilla: Resurgence, is a 2016 Japanese sci-fi monster film directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi. The film tells the story of a giant creature that emerges from Tokyo Bay and begins to wreak havoc upon the city.

The film stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, Satomi Ishihara, and Ren Osugi. It was released in Japan on July 29th, 2016, and was followed by a limited theatrical release in the United States on October 11th.

Plot

The film follows Japan’s Self-Defense Forces as they attempt to combat the rampaging monster Godzilla. As they struggle to find a way to stop it, they are aided by an American scientist played by Ken Watanabe who has studied Godzilla’s biology and behavior. The team soon realizes that traditional methods of combating monsters may not be enough to stop this new threat.

Production

Shin Godzilla was produced by Toho Company Ltd., with original music composed by Shirō Sagisu. Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi co-directed the movie, with Anno also writing the screenplay. The movie was shot entirely in Japan with most of its crew being Japanese as well.

Reception

Shin Godzilla received mostly positive reviews from critics upon its release in Japan and during its limited theatrical release in the United States. Critics praised its visual effects, scale of destruction depicted on screen, as well as its social commentary on modern society’s struggles with bureaucracy and government control. It earned over $71 million dollars at the Japanese box office and nearly $2 million dollars at the US box office during its limited run making it one of Toho’s highest grossing films of all time.
