Is TikTok More Popular Than YouTube?

TikTok has become one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. It’s a short-form video sharing app that allows users to create and share 15-second videos with effects, music, and other content.

In just a few short years, it has gained more than 1 billion users worldwide and is now one of the most popular apps for teens and young adults. But is TikTok more popular than YouTube?

When it comes to sheer numbers, YouTube is still far ahead of TikTok in terms of users. YouTube currently has over 2 billion monthly active users worldwide, while TikTok only has 1 billion – a considerable difference. YouTube also dominates in terms of total video views, with an estimated 5 billion views per day compared to TikTok’s 500 million.

However, when it comes to engagement, the two social media platforms are much closer. While YouTube has been around for much longer than TikTok (14 years vs 3 years) and has a much bigger user base, TikTok’s younger audience is highly engaged with the platform. According to data from Influencer Marketing Hub, TikTok’s average engagement rate is 8%, compared to 4% on YouTube.

TikTok also seems to be gaining traction among advertisers faster than YouTube did when it first launched. In 2020 alone, brands spent more than $1 billion advertising on the platform – a huge leap forward for such a young platform. This suggests that brands are increasingly seeing the value in investing in TikTok ads.

Conclusion:

It appears that although YouTube still has far more users and video views than TikTok does, the latter is quickly gaining ground due to its highly engaged user base and increasing advertiser spending. It remains to be seen which platform will come out on top in the long run but for now it looks like both social media giants are here to stay!
